YOUTH DRUG USE STATISTICS

  • Monitoring the Future Each year since 1975, Monitoring the Future has surveyed a nationwide sample of high school seniors. Since 1991, the project has also included nationwide samples of 8th and 10th grade students. It collects data on the daily, 30-day, yearly and lifetime drug use habits of these students.  The Monitoring the Future project is conducted by the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research.

  • Harvard College Alcohol Study In 1993, the Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study surveyed students at a nationally representative sample of colleges to explore the extent and consequences of binge drinking and identify the types of students involved in this behavior.  A second survey was conducted in 1997 to determine whether any change had occurred in rates of binge drinking and related problems.

  • National Household Survey The National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) is a series of general population surveys, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), that provide current estimates of tobacco use, alcohol use, use of illicit drugs, and nonmedical use of prescription drugs.
