| There are many resources on the
Internet for educators. The following list is just a sampling of favorites from The
Challenge newsletter. The U.S. Department of Education Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program is the Federal government's primary vehicle for reducing drug, alcohol and tobacco use, and violence, through education and prevention activities in the schools. This site provides up-to-date information on grants, model programs, and other news events of interest.
EDUCATION SITES American Association of School Administrators is the professional organization for over 16,500 educational leaders in North America and many other countries. Major focus areas for AASA include improving the condition of children and youth; preparing schools and school systems for the 21st century; and connecting schools and communities. American Federation of Teachers is a 984,000-member union of public and professional employees, including public and private school teachers, paraprofessionals and school-related personnel, higher education faculty and professionals, employees of state and local governments, nurses and health professionals. Education Week on the Web is published by Editorial Projects in Education Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help raise the level of awareness and understanding among professionals and the public of important issues in American education. It covers local, state, and national news and issues from preschool through the 12th grade. National Parent Teachers Association is the oldest and largest volunteer association in the United States working exclusively on behalf of children and youth. The mission of National PTA focuses on supporting and speaking on behalf of children and youth in schools, communities, and before governmental bodies; assisting parents in developing skills needed to raise and protect their children; and encouraging parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation.
Center for Substance Abuse Prevention is a division of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. CSAP's mission is to provide national leadership in the Federal effort to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug problems. CSAP connects people and resources to innovative ideas and strategies, and encourages efforts to reduce and eliminate alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug problems. CSAP fosters the development of comprehensive, culturally appropriate prevention policies and systems that are based on scientifically defensible principles and target both individuals and the environments in which they live. National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI) is the information service of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. NCADI is a great resource for current information and materials concerning substance abuse. NCADI service includes the distribution of ATD materials, including fact sheets, brochures, pamphlets, posters, and video tapes from a large inventory. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is a division of the National Institutes of Health, whose mission is to lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction. This site features information on drugs of abuse, as well as "NIDA goes to school," a science-based drug education section. Office of National Drug Control Policy establishes policies, priorities, and objectives for the Nation's drug control program, the goals of which are to reduce illicit drug use, manufacturing, and trafficking; drug-related crime and violence; and drug-related health consequences.
VIOLENCE PREVENTION SITES National School Safety Center serves as a catalyst and advocate for the prevention of school crime and violence by providing information and resources and identifying strategies and promising programs which support safe schools for school children worldwide. National Resource Center for Safe Schools works with schools, communities, state and local education agencies, and other concerned individuals and agencies to create safe learning environments and prevent school violence. Center for the Prevention of School Violence is a source for information, programs, and research about preventing school violence. The Center's vision is that "every student will attend a school that is safe and secure, one that is free of fear and conducive to learning." Much of its work is directed at making schools more orderly, safer, and more secure. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention -- A division of the Office of Justice programs, OJJDP evaluates federally-assisted juvenile justice and delinquency prevention programs, provides technical assistance to public and private nonprofit prevention programs, establishes training programs for those who work with juvenile offenders or potential offenders, and centralizes research efforts on the problems of juvenile delinquency, including the dissemination of such research and all data related to juvenile delinquency. |
